BLASTING IN The list of raffle prizes is mounting and most of the plans have been finalized, and when you put it together, it adds up to what will be a Fourth of July to remember in Bullard. "We're very excited," said organizer and city councilwoman Pam Frederick. "It's a daunting task to put together an event for the community, but I've had some fantastic help, and the community has responded overwhelmingly." Fireworks and music, food and prizes are all included in the celebration, which has become an annual Bullard tradition. The theme this year is "Blast in the Sky." City staff has been busy soliciting aid and prizes for the raffles, which will be awarded intermittently throughout the event. A complete list of prizes in not yet available, but Frederick said at $1 a ticket, it's a steal. And the money raised is for a good cause - the O.L. Ferrell Park project. "People are always so kind and giving," Frederick said. Frederick has spent a lot of time on the park, and this is a cause close to her heart. The city just accepted a bid for new playground equipment. Local veterinarian and school board member Dr. John Alexander is heading up the musical entertainment. "He's an expert in that area," Frederick said. "I'm excited to have his help." Of course, Alexander's band "Nearly There" will perform. Other acts have yet to be released. "This is a great tradition for all of us," Frederick said. "It's one of those things that can really bring the community together." Raffle tickets are on sale now at Bullard City Hall and other locations. The celebration officially kicks off at 7 p.m. at Bullard High School. Hot dogs, nachos and sausages on a stick will be sold, along with soda and water. "Jim Wright (BISD superintendent) has graciously allowed us use of the facility," said City Manger Larry Morgan. "It's really a cooperative effort." The fireworks are set to light the Bullard skies as soon as darkness falls, and residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Supplies are provided by Barry Wilkinson, Wilkinson Fireworks, and the Bullard Volunteer firefighters' role is two-fold. "We set off the fireworks every year," said Bullard Fire Chief Keith Newburn. "We like to be a part of it, and that way we can also help with the safety precautions." But fun and community building are the goals, and Frederick is excited. "It's an important holiday, and one that encourages a celebration," Frederick said. "We want our neighbors - new, longtime and prospective - to come out and join in."
