Smith wins seat on school board
By Lori Mellinger Bullard Banner News

When longtime school board member Joe Cavender decided against running for another term on the board, two candidates filed to take his place - with Sam Smith winning Saturday's race.

Cavender said it was just time for someone else to serve.

"My children all are grown and out of the school system now," he said. "I just felt that it was time to give someone else the chance."

Smith - who garnered 410 votes against his opponent Louis Newburn for the Place 6 seat on the board - who received 171 votes - said he's ready to give his all to the district.

"It is a little overwhelming to have so many people come and throw their support behind your cause," Smith said. "This election was really about our kids and rallying support to ensure that we do all we can to lay the foundation for their success.

"The voters of the BISD have really responded to the needs of our children financially and the district must stay focused on attaining the highest return on this investment."

Smith commended the current board and its work and said he's ready to help.

"The current school board has worked diligently in this regard, and I hope to bring a component to the board that helps to guide the district to even greater heights," Smith said.

"I am honored to have been given the chance to help lead the charge and I encourage everyone to start getting involved in our schools and make a difference.

The best way to truly understand the needs of our kids is to immerse yourself in their world and activities. It is only then that you will be able to find how you can help to make this district even better for our community

and kids.

Smith said he wanted to thank everyone who both helped on his campaign and voted for him.

"It is an honor that I take very seriously and now it is time to get to work," he said.

Smith said issues of growth in the Bullard ISD must be dealt with in a proactive manner. He said more and more families are moving to Bullard because of the quality schools, and BISD is now a multi-million dollar organization that must be treated as a business and coveted as an asset of the community.

Incumbent Michael Roy faced no opposition in Place 7.

The board will approve the canvassed results on May 22, and board members will be sworn in at the June 11 school board meeting.
