LIVESTOCK AND FORAGE Make plans now to join the Smith County Extension Livestock and Forage Improvement Committee and the East Texas Farm and Ranch Club at a Spring Livestock and Forage Field Day being held April 26. The event will be held from 5-8 p.m. at the North Star Land & Cattle Company, a 2,200 acre ranch located northeast of Winona. Topics being discussed and viewed at the event include: external parasite control in beef cattle, fescue, Tifton 85 bermudagrass, cell grazing, and pasture irrigation of bermudagrass for increased forage production. Two highlights of the field day will be the viewing of a white clover variety trial started last fall on the ranch, and the opportunity to visit with commercial vendors who will be on hand to discuss many of the seed varieties and equipment being shown on the tour. Cost for the field day is $5 per person in advance ($7 at the door) which includes a barbecue sandwich with all the trimmings for supper. Attendees with Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide licenses will receive one hour general continuing education credit. Organizers said pre-registration is requested by April 24. Contact the Smith County Extension office at (903) 590 - 2980 for registration information. North Star Land and Cattle Company is located approximately 2.5 miles northeast of Winona. From Interstate 20, travel north on State Highway 155 to Winona, turn east on FM 16 (travel about 1 mile) and then turn north on County Road 356 (travel about 1.5 miles). The field day entrance will be on the left. Extension programs serve people of all ages regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability, or national origin. | |||||
