Church holds to a tradition When the Rev. James Johnson wanted to buy land across the street from his church a few years ago, some were skeptical. But were it not for that land, the church wouldn't have a place to build a pavilion to hold its annual fund-raiser. Initially begun to help raise money to rebuild the church - after it was destroyed by fire in 2005 - the group now uses the land to hold an annual car show. The show is now in its third year. The event is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 21 at James A. Johnson Recreational Park. "It draws hundreds of car lovers from across the southern United States," Johnson said, a car enthusiast himself. He believes some of the success is owed to his own passion for automobiles. "I've belonged to car clubs, and it's something I really love," Johnson said. "That's where the idea first started." A $20 entry fee allows anyone to enter a car, and trophies will be awarded in at least three categories. But Johnson said he's calling on the rest of the community to help, too. "To keep this event successful, we are asking for support," he said. He said the church needs door prizes, trophies and food. The event doesn't just consist of a car show; there is also food and games for the youth. "Any support is great appreciated," Johnson said. Each company or individual who gives will be publicly recognized. There will also be banners displayed throughout the car show listing all the sponsors. Beyond raising money to build a new church facility, the congregation has now shifted the focus to the youth of the community. "We see a need for youth to be involved in positive activities," Johnson said. "And events like these promote that." He said the church's concern for issues such as teen-age pregnancy, illiteracy and other "harmful cycles," spurred them into a forum to educate, shelter, and provide fun and positive activities. "We want to instill in our youth a sense of hope, love and belonging," Johnson said. For more information and to help with the event, call Johnson at 903-360-0793. To reach the recreational center travel south on U.S. 69 and take a left on Country Road 152 (E. Bowie), travel 1.8 miles on CR 152, which turns into CR 113. Take a right at the recreational park. |
