Leon Johnson

Memorial services for Leon Johnson, 70, Pearland, formerly of Tyler, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at Houston Temple Church of God in Christ, Tyler.

An additional memorial service will be held March 17 at Allen Temple Baptist Church, Oakland, Calif.

Mr. Johnson died Feb. 23, 2007.

He was born Oct. 10, 1936, in Bullard to the late A.B. and Minnie Mae Kemp Johnson.

He grew up and attended public schools and Texas College in Tyler.

He retired from the Navy in 1978 after 23 years and worked for the postal service in San Leandro, Calif., until he retired in 1992.

He was a member of Allen Temple Baptist Church, Oakland, Calif., where he sang in the Men's Chorus, and upon moving to Pearland in 2006, joined Blue Ridge United Methodist Church of Houston.

He was a member of Sons of Solomon Masonic Lodge No. 73, San Jose, Calif., where he served as senior warden trainer.

He was preceded in death by brother, James Johnson, and sister, Gladys Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Verna Marie Johnson; children, Roderick Shehee, Terrance Shehee, Cheryle Mark and Phillip Mark; sister, Marian Johnson; seven grandchildren; and other relatives.
