Varsity softball opens season with a victory

The Bullard varsity softball team started the season off right as they defeated Grapeland, the number seven ranked team in 1A.

In other games the Lady Panthers defeated Westwood 2- 1, Cayuga 2-0, Leon 2-0, and Malakoff in the championship game 5-1

Coach Billy Holcomb is in his first year at Bullard and says the girls are doing a great job.

"I'm very proud of the team," Holcomb said "in the way that we have come together as quick as we have."

If the tournament is any indication of the season to come the girls and their coach should be seeing a lot of each other.

The victory was due in part by a strong pitching performance ending the tournament with 62 strikeouts, 15 hits and 1 walk.

Offensively the win was led by Allison Burton, Valarie Roberts, Kelsey Robertson, Kristan Bell and Erin Kipp.

The girls will face Mineola next in Mineola March 2, with the junior varsity at 4:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 6 p.m.
