Moody shines in Bullard band program
Bobby Woodruff

This year, the Bullard Band Program has continued its rise in the music field to include a successful Symphonic Band Performance on Dec. 14 at Bullard High School.

The Bullard band program has had many outstanding individual band students.

Now along comes the latest All State Band Member, David Moody.

David has attended Bullard Schools since he was in the third grade.

He attended Brook Hill in the sixth grade and he missed out on the start of the Bullard Music program that year.

In the seventh grade, David returned to Bullard Middle School and decided that band was the elective that he wanted to take.

David knew that he wanted to be on the Drum Line because his dad, Joe Moody, had been a drummer in the School Band. Also, David's older brother had been on the Drum line for the Bullard band and David wanted to continue the family tradition.

When David started in the seventh grade he did not have the experience that other students had because he had missed out on the sixth grade band program.

Through hard work on David's part, he was able to catch up and make it up to second chair in the Drum line. The next year, in the eighth grade,

David took over as first chair and was on his way to future success. In both the seventh and eighth grade, David made it to Regional Band and scored high on tympani and snare drums. This past year as a freshman, David made the All-Region Band and also scored high enough to go to the area competition, where he received the fourth chair tympani selection.

Only the top two positions advance to the state competition.

David earned the coveted All-Region Band and All- Area Patch for his letter jacket. What we all need to understand at this point is that David is an exceptional young musician. There are many schools in the Bullard Area and for David as a freshmen, to be the fourth best player out of all of those band students, that was way out there in the world of music. Now comes David's sophomore year in High School and this year, David scored second chair in the All-Region Band tryouts that qualified him for area competition again.

This year David competed again for the coveted All-State competition.

Following the competition that was held at Chapel Hill, David was walking to the cafeteria and as David passed by one of the other tympani players, she smiled and said "Congratulations."

David said, "thank you," but he was confused because he had not seen the final results that had been posted in the cafeteria.

As David walked in to the Cafeteria, he was talking to himself saying, "Did I really get it? Am I the first place winner. "

Sure enough when David looked at the final results, he was number one and on his way to state competition.

The state competition will be Feb. 14-18 in San Antonio.

David will try out against five other areas to decide who will be one of the top two tympani players in the state and then he will perform in the Symphonic Band Concert to be held in conjunction with the All State Band Program.

Over the years, David has been fortunate to have his dad give him instructions during the early and late stages of his career.

Gary Jordan, the Bullard Band Director, has been very helpful in David's musical ascent.

Also Jordan's brother, Johnny, gave some helpful lessons along the way.

This year David went to his Dad's former band director, Danny Prayto of Grapevine, who gave him the final push he needed to make it to state competition.

It has been a great year for David Moody and the Bullard music program.

Our congratulations go out to David, and we wish him a successful State Band Competition in San Antonio.
