Police accept donation
Three area men help procure two cars for City of Bullard
By Lori Mellinger

At Thursday’s Bullard City Council meeting, council members and the police chief thanked three local residents for what they all agreed was an invaluable donation.

It began, Bill Lumley said, when he was talking to a good friend - who also happens to work for the Shreveport Police Department.

“He mentioned - in passing - that his department was about to auction off a bunch of their patrol cars,” Lumley said. So Lumley made a snap decision.

“I know Bullard has limited resources and police cars - especially with the equipment - were probably beyond what they could afford,” Lumley said. “I decided it was something that could do, and I enlisted the help of some friends.”

His friends included James Ball and Pierre De Wet.

And while the vehicles have about 100,000 miles on them, that’s nothing unusual for police cars. More importantly, Chief Gary Lewis said, is the equipment that comes with them.

Lumley said the cars came outfitted with everything except radios and the decals. And since he and Ball paid for the cars, De Wet stepped up and agreed to pay for the rest.

“It’s a great act of generosity, ” said Mayor Connie Vaughan. “I know the police and the city appreciate it.”

Lewis said the cars are outfitted with high-dollar equipment - stuff that is normally out of their price range.

“They already have light bars, cages, and mobile vision cameras,” Lewis said. “That equipment alone is pricey.”

Lewis said the generosity of these men - while unexpected - isn’t surprising having been in Bullard so long.

“People here are generous,” he said. “And these guys want absolutely nothing in return.

“That’s why Bullard is such a great place.”

In other business, the council:

approved a final plat for unit 6 of the Mosley Addition

 approved a preliminary plat for Bullard Crossing;

changed the date of council meetings from the second Thursday to the second Tuesday of the month; and

ratified the appointment of Doris Crockett as Interim City Secretary.

The Bullard City Council meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at Bullard City Hall, North Phillips St., Bullard.
