Brook Hill rolls to win over Frisco
The crowd at the Oct. 27 game at Herrington Stadium on the Brook Hill campus, got to see a dominating attack by the Guard. The win by Brook Hill in the TAPPS Division IV, District 2 contest moved the team a step closer to claiming a postseason playoff berth. Sophomore quarterback John Carroll completed 14 of 22 passes for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns. Carroll also added a rushing touchdown. Demoria Edwards was a force to be reckoned with on the ground, cutting through the Frisco squad for three touchdowns. Brook Hill exploded out of the blocks for a quick 21- 0 in the first quarter.
The opening Brook Hill drive ended in an interception, but soon the Guard found themselves in scoring position again. Following a fumble recovery, Brook Hill took over at the Frisco 30- yard line. An Edwards' run followed by a Carroll quarterback keeper moved the pigskin down inside the 10- yard line. Carroll capped the short drive with a 2-yard scoring lunge through heavy traffic near the goal line. The Han Jun Kee kick was good and Brook Hill broke the seal on the game, leading 7-0 with 4:07 left in the opening period. Again it was the Guard defense that paid off for the squad with Sakhairi Johnson intercepting a Frisco pass. The Guard took over possession at the Frisco 41-yard line. Carroll's runs and a key pass to Zach Davis for 13- yards moved the Guard up in scoring position. The Guard went back to the air with Carroll floating a perfect deep pass over coverage to a waiting Nolan Rose in the end zone. The 17- yard touchdown pass followed by the Kee kick gave the Brook Hill squad a 14-0 lead with 1:07 left in the opening period. Johnson again was the hero on defense for Brook Hill. The junior defensive back came up with a stellar interception nabbing the ball as he fell backwards with the one-handed catch. A run by Edwards aided by a personal foul on Frisco moved the ball to the Frisco 22- yard line. Two plays later Edwards ended the scoring drive with a 6-yard run, slicing and dicing the Frisco defense. Kee's kick was again perfect and the Guard owned a 21-0 lead in the final seconds of the opening period. In the second period the Guard defense forced a punt as Frisco could not get the offense in gear. The Brook Hill offense strung together a 70-yard scoring drive using seven plays to move down the artificial turf. Running back Cody Franklin bulled his way into the end zone on a 4-yard scoring jaunt. With the Kee kick, the Guard had built an impressive 28-0 lead with 8:39 still left in the first half. Following a long kickoff return inside the Brook Hill territory, the Frisco squad struck for their first tally of the game. Mason Leavitt threw a 16-yard scoring pass to John Barthalt. Logan Allison kicked the extra point as the visitors had reduced the lead to the 28-7. The Guard used the kicking game to get in great field position. Johnson took the ensuing kickoff and eluded defenders for a 50- yard gain. Two plays later the Guard scored, this time Carroll tossed a quick slant pass to Davis who cut to the boundary and scored on the 46-yard play. Kee's kick was between the posts and Brook Hill rolled ahead 35- 7. Following a sack by Kameron Frisby and Austin Pile, the Frisco squad had to punt. But Brook Hill was held and they had to turn the ball back over to the visitors. Frisco scored in the final seconds of the first period as Leavitt raced over from a yard out. The extra point saw Brook Hill's lead sliced to 35-14 as the opening half concluded. In the third period, a Frisco drive was ended when Joseph Fryman jumped in front of a Frisco pass for an interception with 8:55 left in the quarter. Three minutes later the turnover was turned into a touchdown. Edwards scored on a 5- yard touchdown dash with 5:44 left on the third quarter clock. Kee's kick hit the upright and fell harmless to the ground and the Guard had to be content with a 41-14 lead. Edwards scored again in the third period, this time from 12-yards out. Frisco added a late score in the final period, but Brook Hill claimed the district win by the 48-21 final. Brook Hill is 4-2 for the year, 1-0 in district. Frisco Legacy falls to 1-3, 0-1 in their first season of football. Johnston said, "We won this game, but we have to get better. The good teams are going to be peaking this time of year. "We are working toward getting better so we can make the playoffs." Brook Hill hosts Rockwall Christian on Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Herrington Stadium. A win by the Guard would not only secure a playoff berth, but the homefield advantage in the first round. "We still have some people out hurt, we can use the off week to rest and prepare," Johnston said. "With just two games in district this win over Frisco was big, but we can't overlook our next game. We'd love to beat Rockwall Christian and get first place." |
