Local author releases first novel

Since age 12, Fletcher King has wanted to write a novel, and this year, after many years of education, research, and writing, the dream has finally come true. The Advent of the King, a medieval adventure, has been published.

"I think of this story as a vacation," says King. "You are in a foreign country with different customs, meeting interesting people, visiting historic palaces and churches, trying the cuisine, and even participating in local festivities -all without a passport, a plane ticket, or having to pack!"

King compares the novel writing process to a ten year pregnancy, with lots of waiting and lots of people asking, 'Is it ready yet?'

"It was an incredible amount of work," says King. "Every free moment of time after work, every holiday, and every day off was spent at the keyboard- writing, re-writing, and tweaking. It is satisfying to know it is done and finally ready to be read and enjoyed."

King decided to write a medieval novel believing the culture and the values of honor, duty, and fidelity would be appealing to modern audiences.

"Life was hard back then, even brutal, but also inspiring," says King.

King wrote the book for adults and warns that although the kingdom is fictional, the issues in the book are not. Certain parts of the story may shock some readers, but all will be entertained.

"I am excited to know how it will be received by the public," King adds, "but the early response from readers has been enthusiastic! "

The Advent of the King, ISBN 1-4259- 1493-4, is set in the 9th century and is available for order online at www.AdventOfTheKing.com. Visitors to the site may read chapter one and purchase the novel and receive the publisher's direct price.

Those without internet access can buy the book at S & S Video in Flint, TX, 903/ 894-7268; or they can order the book through their local bookstore, (but they will not find it on the bookshelves there, and it will be more expensive.)
