VICTORIOUS HOMECOMING
The large crowds at Herrington Stadium saw the Guard not only dominate on offense, but control the game defensively in the Sept. 29 nondistrict battle. Hannah Swanson was named homecoming queen in special ceremonies at half time of the contest. The Guard had plenty to smile about in the onesided win. "We're glad to get the win, glad this one is in the books," Brook Hill head football coach Paul Johnston said. "Homecoming is for the fans, but it makes a coach nervous. We don't like the distractions and change in routine. But we won it and now our fans can be happy." "We played well defensively, but All Saints helped us out with some dropped passes," Johnston said. "All Saints played hard and we were pleased to get a win against them."
The Guard fell behind 3-0 with the visitors scoring following a Brook Hill turnover to take the first quarter lead. Brook Hill proved they could score by land or in the air. Inglehart ran for a 12-yard touchdown run. Then John Carroll tossed a 19-yard scoring pass to Sakhairi Johnson. Han Jun Kee's extra point kicks gave the Guard a 14-3 advantage. All Saints scored on a trick play, a pass from receiver Stephen Ham to Shawn Carney. The extra point allowed the Trojans to reduce the Brook Hill lead to 14-10. Brook Hill got another scoring run, this time after a change in signal-callers. Quarterback Drew Maudlin raced in from 17- yards out. The Guard put the game on ice with short scoring runs by Inglehart. Inglehart also added a score on defense, scooping up a fumble and rumbling 37 yards to pay dirt. Edwards closed the night on the Brook Hill touchdown assault with a short range trot to the end zone. Johnson paced the receiving efforts for the Guard with five catches for 90 yards, he also had an interception on defense. In recent junior varsity action, Brook Hill defeated All Saints, 44-6. Concerning the varsity win over All Saints, Johnston said his team still needs to make improvements before the start of district play. "Our running game is not where it needs to be," Johnston said. "We are still making too many mental mistakes. I try to remember this team is very young. This is just our second year, we can only teach so much in practice. The rest the players have to learn under the lights on Friday night. That can be tough, but it is all about getting better for district." Brook Hill will play Grace Community at T.K. Gorman's Mc Callum stadium. Grace is rolling with a 48-7 win over Oakwood. Johnston added, "This will be a big game. We are 3-1 and Grace is 3-2. It's a big game for us since both programs are in their second year. Grace will throw it, they can put up some points. We are definitely facing a team that is on a roll. I think we will be ready for the challenge." |
