The Smith County Commissioners Court and Veteran Services Office on Tuesday kicked off “Operation Reciprocity: Serving Those Who Served Us,” a summer-long outreach initiative for the local veteran community. The county will provide information to the public about services offered by the Smith County Veteran Services Office (VSO) and will ask for feedback about how the county can better serve the local veteran community through its VSO. more

East Texas Communities Foundation recently awarded $189,500 in scholarships to high school and college students from East Texas for the 2018-19 school years. New scholarship recipients were honored at a reception at Marvin United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 10. Scholarship amounts range from $300-$5,000 per student originating from 52 different scholarship funds at East Texas Communities Foundation. more

Jeremie Del Ral Ford, 30, was sentenced following his conviction in the month of May on charges of theft of livestock. The charges were the result of an investigation led by Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Special Ranger Larry Hand. Hand was assisted in the investigation by TSCRA Special Ranger Jimmy Dickson as well as the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. more
The International Foodservice Distributors Association announced recently that United States Congressman Gohmert (R- Tyler) has been named a recipient of the 2018 Thomas Jefferson Award. The bi-annual award recognizes legislators whose voting record indicates strong support of policies that enable the U.S. foodservice distribution industry to create well-paying jobs, grow their businesses, and contribute to their local communities. more
